A SENSE OF LOSS

Many parents are caught unprepared for the sharp sense of loss they feel at this stage of their child’s development. Your toddler’s new ability to get up and go has loosened your physical control over her life. Suddenly the cozy balance of power that’s existed between the two of you has shifted. Her growing independence and problem-solving skills may make you feel less needed, or even rejected. Some parents may exaggerate imaginary dangers lurking around every corner to justify whisking their child up into their arms once again. It’s sometimes very difficult to strike a balance between your child’s need to explore and your need to quell your own apprehension.

You can make a point of establishing perimeters within which your toddler can roam relatively freely. If you’ve done a good job baby-proofing an area of your house, and are attentive, you should be comfortable encouraging your child to explore. You’ll lessen the number of times you have to thwart her assertive behavior, and she won’t feel micromanaged. When you do have to step in and set limits, your child may very well get angry at you. Don’t take her dismay to heart or be indignant. She’s entitled to feel disgruntled.
